Who We Are
Incorporated in 1988, the Alliance for Aging, Inc., was designated by the State of Florida as the Area Agency on Aging for Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. The Alliance is a private, not-for-profit agency, part of a network of 11 Area Agencies on Aging in the State of Florida. We are a community leader serving the needs of older people and adults with disabilities. The Alliance is funded through the Florida Department of Elder Affairs using both state and federal programs. In addition, the Alliance receives grant funding and private donations to expand its services to the community. The goal of the agency is to help people stay at home in the community and avoid placement in nursing homes.
A major function of the Alliance is to provide information about available services for older adults, caregivers, and adults with disabilities, and how to obtain these services. Services including congregate and home-delivered meals, adult day care, personal care, legal assistance and transportation are delivered to older people through a network of local service provider agencies throughout both counties. Other services may also be available.
Individuals age 60 or older and adults with disabilities are eligible for services from the Alliance. Some services have additional requirements for eligibility such as income, dementia, or frailty. Caregivers of any age who are caring for an older person may also be eligible for services.
The Helpline, a unit of the Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC), ensures access to callers and assists in finding information, resources, and services available in the community. Helpline is the first contact for older people and adults with disabilities who want to receive long term care services in the home. There is, however, an extensive waiting list for these services depending on level of need.
The Alliance ensures integrity in service delivery through monitoring, including fiscal accountability of provider agencies that have contracts with the Alliance. The Alliance also administers the SHINE program which uses highly-trained volunteers to provide free and un-biased counseling on Medicare and other health insurance issues. The office of Planning and Population Health empowers older adults and their caregivers to live active and healthy lives through educational and other opportunities.
We encourage you to learn about all the programs and services available through the Alliance and our extensive community network throughout both counties.
