In an era where social isolation and loneliness have become significant health challenges for older adults, the Alliance for Aging is proud of its transformative collaboration with My Meaningful Life, LLC under the AMIGOS Project, funded by the Humana Foundation. Led by world-renowned gerontology consultant, certified grief counselor, and life transition coach Ligia M. Houben, founder of My Meaningful Life, LLC, these award-winning programs are designed to provide South Florida elders with the emotional tools and community connections necessary to thrive.

The cornerstone of this partnership is the Live, Learn, and Grow weekly virtual series, offered in English and Spanish. Recognizing that social isolation can be as damaging to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, this program offers a consistent, “camera-on” virtual community.

Each session serves as a “circle of light,” where participants engage in discussions on holistic wellness, stress management, and the art of happiness. By meeting weekly, elders build lasting friendships and a support network that extends far beyond the screen, directly combating the loneliness that often accompanies aging in place.

Navigating loss—whether it be the passing of a loved one, a change in health, or a move from a family home—is one of life’s most difficult journeys. To address this, the Alliance also sponsors the award-winning Transforming Grief and Loss seminar, an in-person eight-week seminar.

Grounded in Houben’s signature 11 Principles of Transformation®, this 8-week series provides a roadmap for those feeling “stuck” in their loss. Unlike traditional support groups, this program focuses on:

  • Empowerment: Moving from a place of “existing” to truly “living” again.
  • Resilience: Learning to find meaning in the wake of loss.
  • Shared Experience: Breaking the silence of grief by connecting with others who understand the journey.

By addressing the physical, emotional, and social dimensions of aging, these programs empower elders to remain independent, connected, and vibrant.
